The Weather Phenomena Awareness Program is part of ongoing efforts to promote a culture of prevention, reduce risks, and raise community awareness about the direct impacts of weather fluctuations on public safety and daily life. The program aims to empower community members to understand the nature of various weather phenomena, recognize their potential risks, and respond appropriately in ways that help minimize human and material losses.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense, in partnership with 19 government entities, is implementing the program to unify awareness messages and deliver them in a precise and reliable manner. This approach enhances community preparedness and encourages adherence to official guidance issued by the competent authorities during weather emergencies.

The program addresses a range of weather phenomena, including the risks of heavy rainfall and its associated impacts such as water accumulation, flash floods, disruption of services and infrastructure, and direct effects on transportation and the safety of lives and property—particularly in low-areas. It also covers sandstorms and their consequences, including reduced or near-zero horizontal visibility, increased likelihood of traffic accidents, health effects on individuals with respiratory conditions, and potential disruption or delays to transportation services.

Additionally, the program highlights the risks of heavy snowfall and cold waves, characterized by significant drops in temperature over extended periods, along with their associated health and environmental hazards. It also addresses heatwaves and prolonged high temperatures, which may lead to heat stress, heatstroke, increased risk of fires, and rised dangers to people in exposed areas.

The program places special emphasis on strong winds and their potential impacts, including fallen trees and utility poles, flying signs, property and structural damage, direct risks to pedestrians and vehicles, and high waves caused by strong winds or weather disturbances. These conditions can threaten the safety of fishermen and beachgoers, disrupt ports and maritime transport, and cause damage to coastal areas.

Furthermore, the Weather Phenomena Awareness Program addresses the dangers of dense fog and dust particles due to their direct impact on visibility and air quality, which may result in higher rates of traffic accidents, flight delays or cancellations, and adverse health effects for individuals with respiratory illnesses.
